Boating the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 22:56One of the best boat trips in Florida is the Altantic Intracoastal Waterway. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway is a canal that runs along the Atlantic seaboard from Norfolk, Virginia, to Miami.
The Intracoastal Waterway is one of the best boat trips in America, a pleasure boater with the time can cruise all the way from Miami to New Jersey using the ICW and other canals if they have the time. The official ICW ends at Norfolk, Virginia, but a boater can go all the way to the Manasquan River in New Jersey if they want.
All of the cities along Florida’s Atlantic Coast and many of the state’s top tourist attractions are easily accessible from the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway. Cities boaters can visit include Miami, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Daytona Beach, and Jacksonville. Several of the state’s most famous beaches are right on the water way.
Attractions along the waterway include the Everglades, the city of Miami, the Kennedy Space Center Cape Canaveral, the Daytona Speedway, and lots of beautiful beaches. Cruising up the waterway is a cheap and easy way to see all of these sights. It’s also a lot of fun especially if a person or family takes the trip in a houseboat. Other attractions such as Disney World are a few hours drive from the waterway. Those who want to go further can visit places as the historic cities of Savannah Georgia, and Charleston, North Carolina, Myrtle Beach and Norfolk.
The Intracoastal Waterway also connects to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway which goes all the way to Brownsville, Texas on the Mexican border. A trip on that waterway can take a person to Panama City, Pensacola, Mobile, New Orleans, Houston and Galveston.
The Intracoastal Waterway is a great way to see Florida and other states. Its also easy to sail on because it isn’t on the ocean. Boating on the Intracoastal waterway can be a relaxing experience. It can also be a cheap and exciting vacation for those who are lucky enough to own a houseboat.
There are a large number of Marinas along the Intracoastal Waterway to give people places to stay. Some of these marinas will rent house boats to those who don’t own them.
The Intracoastal Waterway system is maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. This agency was responsible for constructing the system during the 20th Century. A lot of information about the Intracoastal Waterway can be found at http://www.nao.usace.army.mil the website of the Army Corps of Engineers.
