BOAT DESCRIPTION

Alden Challenger 38 originally a yawl, now rigged as a sloop, very rare! Sitka spruce spars and standing rigging in excellent condition, new wiring, new hot and cold pressure water plumbing, new bronze ports with screens, new Bomar hatches, high output alternator, rebuilt Westerbeke, 400 AH AGM battery with solar panels and more... "Marguerite" is John G. Alden Inc. design # 949V. She is one of about 54 sisterships built and the only Challenger known to be for sale at this time, anywhere in the world. The hull was constructed by Halmatic Ltd, Portsmouth, England in 1960, then finished and imported to the US by A. Le Compte Company of Jutphaas Holland, N.V. (http://www.lecomteyachts.com/profile_frame.htm), known for building high quality yachts until 1994, when they closed. This vessel was launched in 1961. Born in 1884, John G. Alden founded his yacht design office in 1909 after serving an apprenticeship with Starling Burgess. The design office closed while he served in the army during the First World War, but his name was made when his 'Malabar' design won the 600 mile Newport-Bermuda race in 1923, 1926, and 1932, all with Alden at the helm. In 1932, all four top finishers were Alden designs. John Alden himself retired in 1956, by which time his design office had a workforce of 90. The John G. Alden collection of designs is now in MIT's Hart Nautical Collection. She is a delight to sail and has taken her owners up and down the Maine coast many times. She is in need of some detailing, new ceilings at the pilot and v-berths, fairing and Awlgrip from the water line to the toe rail and her bottom paint needs to cleaned and refinished. Vessel Walk-Through: You will board Marguerite via a wide side deck that leads to a comfortable cockpit, the varnished cockpit combing has been trimmed in raw teak, while the seats and cockpit sole are left in raw teak for traction. Two sets of self-tailing winches handle the primary and spinnaker loads. A canvas dodger protects the cockpit and all lines can be led aft to a main winch and a bank of rope clutches located on the cabin top below the dodger. Down the companionway to a warm mahogany interior, the nav station and ice chest is to starboard and an L shaped galley to port updated with the an LP stove in new cabinetry and corian countertops. Settees are forward on either side divided by a large table that seats six comfortably. Outboard of the settees are snug pilot berths with lee-boards for safety. The salon contains the original Dutch tiled coal/wood stove adding comfort on those cold spring and fall evenings. Forward to port is the updated head with laminated walls, mahogany vanity with corian sink and countertop with handheld faucet for bathing. Head is plumbed to a larger holding tank plumbed below the v-berth with a 3-way valve for on deck and overboard waste discharge. Across from the head is a built-in bureau and 2 hanging lockers. Past the head is the V-Berth with sail and groundtackle locker forward. There are two large opening deck hatches (Lewmar Ocean 60's) and 6 bronze opening ports with screens and 3 solar vents for ventilation and light. Both solid companionway boards and screened companionway boards are included. Hull 1. Solid fiberglass hull and deck with no core material.
